Fence Installation Done Right in Slidell

Building a fence in Slidell means dealing with three things most fence guides never mention: soggy ground, HOA paperwork, and a city permit office with real rules. Slidell sits on low, flat land near Lake Pontchartrain, and the city itself warns that storm surge, back-flooding off Bayou Bonfouca, and plain drainage trouble can put water on almost any property. Posts set in that kind of ground the lazy way lean, heave, and rot early. W2 Commercial Construction builds fences across Slidell, from Olde Towne lots to the waterfront streets of Eden Isles and Oak Harbor, and we set every post for the ground it actually sits in.

We are a licensed Louisiana contractor (LA Lic# 78829) based just up the road in Covington, with more than 20 years working St. Tammany Parish. Wood privacy, vinyl, chain link, ornamental aluminum, and farm fencing, plus decks and gates. Because we also handle grading and drainage, we can fix the wet spot along your fence line instead of building through it. Slidell Fence Permits: What the City Requires

Inside Slidell city limits, the city requires a permit before you build a new fence or structurally alter an existing one. The city's fence application also sets the rules people trip over most: front-yard fences are capped at 4 feet, with any solid, can't-see-through portion limited to 2 feet 6 inches, and on corner lots nothing between 2.5 and 10 feet tall can block the 35-foot sight triangle at the intersection. A fence 8 feet or taller, or one built of masonry, needs a full building permit on top. Barbed wire, razor ribbon, and corrugated sheet metal are banned outright.

Those details come from the city's own permit form, and the city updates its rules, so confirm the current requirements with the Permits Department at 250 Bouscaren St (985-646-4323) before you build. One more wrinkle: if your address is outside city limits, your permit runs through St. Tammany Parish in Mandeville instead. We deal with both offices all the time and handle the paperwork as part of the job.

Wet Ground, Water Tables, and Fence Posts That Last

Much of Slidell is low and flat, and the soil stays saturated through winter and spring. Dig a post hole in February in parts of town and it fills with water before you can set the post. That is not a reason to skip the fence, it is a reason to build it right: deeper holes where the ground allows, gravel at the base so water drains away from the post, concrete poured to shed water, and metal or treated posts matched to the conditions. On waterfront lots in Eden Isles, Oak Harbor, and The Inlets, wind exposure raises the bar again.

Slidell knows what a storm can do. During Katrina, the National Weather Service recorded surge of 10 to 20 feet along the Northshore and winds at Slidell Airport of 70 mph sustained with gusts near 100. A fence cannot be hurricane-proof, but post depth, footing size, panel style, and hardware decide whether it survives an ordinary storm season. We build for the wind we actually get here, and if your low spot needs it, we can cut in a French drain along the fence line while the equipment is already on site.

Termites, Materials, and HOA Approval in Slidell

The LSU AgCenter calls the Formosan subterranean termite the most destructive insect in Louisiana, and St. Tammany Parish has been under the state's termite quarantine since 2005. Formosans nest in soil and go after wood that touches the ground, which is exactly what an untreated fence post is. Around Slidell that means pressure-treated pine at minimum, and for a lot of yards vinyl, aluminum, or chain link simply makes better long-term sense. We will give you the honest trade-offs by material instead of pushing the most expensive option.

If you live in a covenant neighborhood, the fence also has to clear your HOA before it clears the city. Clipper Estates, for example, publishes design guidelines and runs every project through an architectural review committee, and the parish's own directory lists active associations from Heritage Estates to Slidell Country Club Estates. We have been through plenty of ARC submittals: pick the style, we provide the drawings and specs your board wants to see.

Do I need a permit to build a fence in Slidell?
Yes, inside city limits Slidell requires a permit before you build a new fence or structurally change an existing one. Front-yard height, corner-lot sight lines, and material rules apply, and 8-foot or masonry fences need a building permit. Confirm current rules with the city at 985-646-4323. Outside city limits, the permit runs through St. Tammany Parish instead. We handle the paperwork either way.
What is the best fence material for Slidell yards?
It depends on the lot. Wet, low ground and Formosan termites are hard on wood, so treated pine is the minimum and vinyl, aluminum, or chain link often lasts longer for the money. Waterfront and open lots need wind-smart panel choices. We walk the property and recommend by conditions, not by price tag.
How deep do fence posts need to be in wet Slidell soil?
Deep enough to hold in soil that stays saturated part of the year, which usually means going past the loose topsoil, adding gravel for drainage at the base, and sizing the concrete footing to the fence height and wind load. The right depth varies lot to lot, and that judgment is most of what you hire a fence crew for.
Will you handle my HOA approval in neighborhoods like Clipper Estates or Oak Harbor?
We prepare what the architectural review needs: fence style, height, materials, and a simple site drawing showing the run. You submit it to your board (most HOAs require the homeowner to file), and we build once it is approved. Planning the submittal into the schedule up front keeps the project from stalling.
How much does a fence cost in Slidell?
Most fences on the Northshore run about $10 to $45 per linear foot installed depending on material, which puts a typical yard in the $3,000 to $9,000 range. Gates, tear-out, and ground conditions move the number. Our Northshore fence cost guide breaks it down, and an exact price takes a quick free estimate on site.
