Metairie is the largest community in Jefferson Parish, and almost all of it sits on ground that has to be pumped dry. The parish itself puts it plainly: most of its land is below sea level, so every hard rain gets lifted out through canals and pump stations instead of draining on its own. The soil underneath is Mississippi-alluvium clay that swells in wet months and shrinks in dry ones. Between the two, Metairie concrete leads a hard life. Driveways settle and tilt, patios crack, yards hold water, and fence posts loosen in soft ground. Most of the housing here went up between the 1950s and the 1980s, so a lot of that original flatwork is past its service life and due for replacement.
That replacement work is what W2 Commercial Construction does on this side of the lake. We are a licensed Louisiana contractor (LA Lic# 78829) based in Covington, and the Causeway lands in Metairie, so our crews run one bridge from the yard to your driveway. We pour concrete that accounts for what this ground does, install drainage that moves water off the lot, and build fences and decks set to hold in soft soil. From Old Metairie to Bucktown, we plan the work around the dirt first.
Most Metairie concrete jobs start with concrete that failed: a driveway that settled toward the house, a walkway heaved by tree roots, a patio cracked along the middle instead of at the joints. The cause is almost always under the slab. Expansive clay moves as its moisture changes, and the parish has documented subsidence in Metairie, so ground support here is never a given. We tear out the failed work, fix the base with compacted fill, and pour driveways, slabs, sidewalks, patios, and stamped concrete with the steel and joints placed to keep the new surface flat and tight.
The neighborhoods each bring their own wrinkle. Around Old Metairie and Metairie Club Gardens, mature live oaks shade big lots, and their roots both lift flatwork and dry out the clay beneath it, so slab layout has to respect the trees. Old Metairie also carries its own rules: inside the Metairie Ridge Tree Preservation District, driveways, retaining walls, and drainage excavations need a tree-preservation permit and an arborist review before work starts. We handle that paperwork as part of the job.
Jefferson Parish east bank pumps can move roughly three quarters of an inch of rain per hour, and Metairie storms regularly beat that. The May 1995 storm dropped about 20 inches in half a day, and Hurricane Francine overtopped canals here in 2024. When the system backs up, the difference between a wet street and a wet slab is how your own lot is graded. We install French drains, surface drains, and yard regrading that move water away from foundations, driveways, and low spots, including the low pockets around Hoey's Basin in Old Metairie that the parish itself flags as flood-prone.
We also build fences across Metairie, in wood, vinyl, chain-link, aluminum, and privacy styles. Jefferson Parish requires a building permit for a fence of any size, and posts here need deeper settings and better drainage than dry-ground fencing, so both the paperwork and the installation get done right. Add a deck off the back of the house and the same thinking applies: footings sized for soft ground, hardware rated for the humidity, and a structure that stays level after the clay moves.
